R2 is at 99% with only 3 remaining parts - and beautiful weathering! Here's a photo....
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKVc_FIqMrSAax8ELczRzLTTRaiWBgWgbZ2Lksi0Xsefva7qS9ipkEWpGOKfNxRHIG3lgCpycfQ2pqLmBicoC6ukP97fkdq59Bl81fvVTRHnd2NDvAEmIwwBFkm88lsd_fjv7sVLAa7U/s1600/11217735_1445456929111070_7373821163565416342_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCKVc_FIqMrSAax8ELczRzLTTRaiWBgWgbZ2Lksi0Xsefva7qS9ipkEWpGOKfNxRHIG3lgCpycfQ2pqLmBicoC6ukP97fkdq59Bl81fvVTRHnd2NDvAEmIwwBFkm88lsd_fjv7sVLAa7U/s400/11217735_1445456929111070_7373821163565416342_o.jpg" /></a></div>God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-29931124933127881482014-08-17T11:26:00.000-07:002014-08-17T11:26:33.869-07:00How about an update?!So what's new?! It's been awhile since I have posted, and I apologize for that! There actually has been quite a lot going on in the background, and i've kept you all in the dark! For starters, this blog reached over 10 THOUSAND views! That's quite a lot and I appreciate each and every one of them!!
Now, whats new?????
Well, for starters. I did NOT like how the skin snaps worked. Removing the skins time and time again became frustrating and eventually started causing panels to fall off. So I found a new set of skins, and purchased a set of skin blocks from Com-8 (www.commando8.com). These skin blocks will allow the skins to be permanent, or at least very difficult to remove.
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHOge239cUGJukQ3WC1s1-SQEm-StYb70B-PVdQXB2FkID6i-u83ZQmN2kLgVUvLT9sxTLNHiNGAWtDH0teopEaHw7x3voGnNS_p3n5JvhxHdGFx0PJdHcvWzU7z34ffblnusskcZ5TY/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHOge239cUGJukQ3WC1s1-SQEm-StYb70B-PVdQXB2FkID6i-u83ZQmN2kLgVUvLT9sxTLNHiNGAWtDH0teopEaHw7x3voGnNS_p3n5JvhxHdGFx0PJdHcvWzU7z34ffblnusskcZ5TY/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a>
So, if the skins can't come off, how do I access the inside? Well simply put, you make some modifications to the frame. I added a 3/4 rear door. This was quite a obstacle because the JAG frame isn't designed for a rear door. So I had to drill for door 'frame'.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjONWfY4NOKopRhTBpWCfztze5lwgXiZ9ADdD52cLz3WuRfxTeO54JLrDqQKDCP3EjWZRoKKWzBacsTZLZ3N6octYQhCEpWYkE-qOkxhaKsfK4OX45uIxSJUkcR8rTHs9H1olFGbZfsSXA/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjONWfY4NOKopRhTBpWCfztze5lwgXiZ9ADdD52cLz3WuRfxTeO54JLrDqQKDCP3EjWZRoKKWzBacsTZLZ3N6octYQhCEpWYkE-qOkxhaKsfK4OX45uIxSJUkcR8rTHs9H1olFGbZfsSXA/s400/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7YSV0jNANgt8YjTyT_FdOIzbXI-o0P-GNElEyzXRh5RbqH9SxUKp73Pb47yh_bNKbX3ChnHF_s1XKsajtEBJ80idVYrKYfNQ7_XH9MxgxFr5Zdu260bA5zWf3PgwiUyeZj31r6isultM/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7YSV0jNANgt8YjTyT_FdOIzbXI-o0P-GNElEyzXRh5RbqH9SxUKp73Pb47yh_bNKbX3ChnHF_s1XKsajtEBJ80idVYrKYfNQ7_XH9MxgxFr5Zdu260bA5zWf3PgwiUyeZj31r6isultM/s400/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div>
Unfortunately, because of the frame of the door, I had to relocate the drive for the dome. I had to move it to the OPPOSITE side. What a bummer, so the frame had to come a part again, and then I had to drill/countersink holes for the drive. I tried to reverse the direction of the door, but for some reason, it didn't fit the frame well when I did. So removing and relocating the drive was the best choice. It was easier than I thought.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivHS8KiuAEJZNT73iT8Eqw5OdwKndw7nKmkcG0EEfv-byVEbYVhekHqro-E7vXpORxJnuBxo5OIbi79yFUFnCyHYkrVgT9-u3ToNgSfKpw4SVZk7tQUjOw5Ki6JVDoAECEEnC_CafOiW0/s1600/photo+4(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivHS8KiuAEJZNT73iT8Eqw5OdwKndw7nKmkcG0EEfv-byVEbYVhekHqro-E7vXpORxJnuBxo5OIbi79yFUFnCyHYkrVgT9-u3ToNgSfKpw4SVZk7tQUjOw5Ki6JVDoAECEEnC_CafOiW0/s400/photo+4(1).JPG" /></a></div>
Okay, so now we move to the work shop. While I had R2 in pieces, I figured this was the best time to fix a lot of the errors. The paint had really taken a beating from having to take parts on and off (and repeat). So I went ahead and sanded a LOT of the original parts to prepare for a repaint.

The rest of the parts (and dome) are in these tool boxes. I nearly have EVERYTHING to complete R2. With the exception of 3 parts.
1. Ankle Details
2. Ankle Cylinder/Wedges
3. Outer Shoulder Hubs.
Once we have those - he'll be done!

One of the premier conventions in the midwest. This was a very special occasion for me as it marked the FIRST time R2 has ever driven on his own!! I'm going to show some pictures and pretty much leave it at that!
Here was the setup of our booth on Friday.

Here's a picture of the rear of my R2. Notice how he's using scooter motors? The motors (Even at 12V) were plenty strong enough to move my all aluminum droid.

For starters, R2 needed a new droid sled. I was taking some trash out one day and saw this pallet at the dumpster. Looking at it, it was in great shape, and the perfect size for R2. The pallet was built out of 1x4's so it was very light. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_AF6LtOifZwXFont7HEDDBKwG_DyHoQao7FeD7X52Jeww3RoudDBt_woUVRtFe7PwDpvRJhdMjfDNC-6Zu7c5fJArQ9Wq9iSkW1NZxWTnY4WDDNwtakf2zuf1LJAe5dAq2rfvl-wdalE/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_AF6LtOifZwXFont7HEDDBKwG_DyHoQao7FeD7X52Jeww3RoudDBt_woUVRtFe7PwDpvRJhdMjfDNC-6Zu7c5fJArQ9Wq9iSkW1NZxWTnY4WDDNwtakf2zuf1LJAe5dAq2rfvl-wdalE/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
So next, we had to make it better. Needed to add some wood, and make a few adjustments so that it was perfect. I picked up a few boards at Home Depot, and a short time later, we were done with the frame.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn8JSEKTO5rAzNvbULHjmnteG8eI8vMzTsKt8kUOAyptGHUDFCKoFW5_Jzncmjn6guy-ayYJWmY16yW8j9TpJfPIWu2kEytchep6GJaSna57RGftjZSj7jQBVK-YbVuI0C9gECRx3YbPE/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn8JSEKTO5rAzNvbULHjmnteG8eI8vMzTsKt8kUOAyptGHUDFCKoFW5_Jzncmjn6guy-ayYJWmY16yW8j9TpJfPIWu2kEytchep6GJaSna57RGftjZSj7jQBVK-YbVuI0C9gECRx3YbPE/s320/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzct0ZhLoayBubjA9RxAivfkaBaqlP0bSa9NU97WbqYhGgURC94Et8yikFwAIe9w4d-yqZ_dfaTTBazG77Bkx1Tq4sYA1IVQ-usCUq5BRTllLbsWRLqL3zACxqYbThvoyKW_AW_cvK9k/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpzct0ZhLoayBubjA9RxAivfkaBaqlP0bSa9NU97WbqYhGgURC94Et8yikFwAIe9w4d-yqZ_dfaTTBazG77Bkx1Tq4sYA1IVQ-usCUq5BRTllLbsWRLqL3zACxqYbThvoyKW_AW_cvK9k/s320/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div>
But it wasn't done. I wanted something that was a little more personal. So I went to Hobby Lobby and bought some stencils. Something many of you (all of you) don't know is that I own www.astrodroid.net - There is nothing there now, but I have big plans for it. Due to that reason I opted to put Astro Droid on the outside. After all, C3PO is quoted as saying "That little Astro Droid"......
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpqn7d7550opveGjpU6J7AqHVezeE_bZdEnDAfgWErnpxDBfemIoJe0ALs6fP86ecagN9937Vy0MeglOxVaEoa0xXnjShMK9o50uxRRujIJ2KC6PH5KFbrjiDshfcvDZ1idpsDLzb26p0/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpqn7d7550opveGjpU6J7AqHVezeE_bZdEnDAfgWErnpxDBfemIoJe0ALs6fP86ecagN9937Vy0MeglOxVaEoa0xXnjShMK9o50uxRRujIJ2KC6PH5KFbrjiDshfcvDZ1idpsDLzb26p0/s320/photo+5.JPG" /></a></div>
So after the stenciling, this is what we ended up with....
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHfA_z-iWpqd8mfTHhd89H-zlJu_X1HdIytNuVGL2H6LuziVTLLJ7N05iH4i3xiTILG1ebqYphaF4BrDrVem8wHTlXSiL57zEpWchMlO_wAUwEqRstDxCFyyuEpvwCinnqv-h1teG8B5s/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHfA_z-iWpqd8mfTHhd89H-zlJu_X1HdIytNuVGL2H6LuziVTLLJ7N05iH4i3xiTILG1ebqYphaF4BrDrVem8wHTlXSiL57zEpWchMlO_wAUwEqRstDxCFyyuEpvwCinnqv-h1teG8B5s/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJEAWQjjcuKjRMlx7pE55GjO8rG8WJJJiFir0yGKtwd_2EYWG6Xu1Up-RHKLydGTnhdr90i7wwnmTOEj0Z7U2-DFdp1uxXGP-31dWWhApTCo2pItpPaX_MQxc2L4oYrEigq-racg8UKkU/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJEAWQjjcuKjRMlx7pE55GjO8rG8WJJJiFir0yGKtwd_2EYWG6Xu1Up-RHKLydGTnhdr90i7wwnmTOEj0Z7U2-DFdp1uxXGP-31dWWhApTCo2pItpPaX_MQxc2L4oYrEigq-racg8UKkU/s320/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwc_efnmh0BcVCI4m9ISVHszqNdWA5RWT08fUt8o46r1q7b2ijliDQd0x1XDKz40DcWjgsI_R_POrBZkMPrzkAE05d7-fIYTfG9w5pleAMS2c82BdheYOfP_t7GUmL_l-oe3Ad_l534T0/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwc_efnmh0BcVCI4m9ISVHszqNdWA5RWT08fUt8o46r1q7b2ijliDQd0x1XDKz40DcWjgsI_R_POrBZkMPrzkAE05d7-fIYTfG9w5pleAMS2c82BdheYOfP_t7GUmL_l-oe3Ad_l534T0/s320/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div>
Finally, that was done.....now to work on R2.
For starters, it was time to add ankle locks. R2 needs ankle locks because he sits on a 36 degree ankle. No locks, legs don't hold position, and R2 face plants. No bueno. You need to make sure they're lined up well, and I (after the fact) HIGHLY recommend you test them with the legs bolted on before drilling. I wish I would have.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZdfaEMiAzjKtsCDMivIeJBhhY7E7X6Vmwc5YEJ1prgswLMqbM4lRo9OtSbdLKJVzmghM5QuQj0SmHdH9pRC0FXCR3_N0DjSoG3MtcImnV0ckgVr7XVWC9zLsZiiqkTFp30WUJRYbZpw/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZdfaEMiAzjKtsCDMivIeJBhhY7E7X6Vmwc5YEJ1prgswLMqbM4lRo9OtSbdLKJVzmghM5QuQj0SmHdH9pRC0FXCR3_N0DjSoG3MtcImnV0ckgVr7XVWC9zLsZiiqkTFp30WUJRYbZpw/s320/photo+4.JPG" /></a></div>
While I was doing the ankle locks, I was also adding the bushings for the ankles. These allow shoulder screws to pass through.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfN2d3TlWCbs0gr0SqvKpTG4CzSgHe3usik3xawHlfirFRNAq3FUo57PtE024PDz8gU1PlNfWwmJDriuIaGhXYHdtv9hk9KD7yxaMleD8D178ZUMvk3ViU0J_lrmvm1OMMOQtZAvEkjqI/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfN2d3TlWCbs0gr0SqvKpTG4CzSgHe3usik3xawHlfirFRNAq3FUo57PtE024PDz8gU1PlNfWwmJDriuIaGhXYHdtv9hk9KD7yxaMleD8D178ZUMvk3ViU0J_lrmvm1OMMOQtZAvEkjqI/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
Here is a picture of me tapping the center ankle.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GUkIi_mQYpBX4q0ouUVqW8fqGPYADaUtfzcv4tJhGU1cVsQJZL3MiyK4J6uQaCmP9KDBSAkvjHxGkSOe9ZfPQNfjJf7tzyCR9OBrcqAU4uwgb6bz0wMxiYNDz0sWjfdJhf8SAn8Qsbk/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GUkIi_mQYpBX4q0ouUVqW8fqGPYADaUtfzcv4tJhGU1cVsQJZL3MiyK4J6uQaCmP9KDBSAkvjHxGkSOe9ZfPQNfjJf7tzyCR9OBrcqAU4uwgb6bz0wMxiYNDz0sWjfdJhf8SAn8Qsbk/s320/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div>
Finally, here is a photo of the ankles all done.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuneX7KwL1QAUEppdq8YenXhyphenhyphenw6xMNM_o4Rwn-QO4uJ3hRXpansMxLsve8WFLSXSdPpIQohiE7OK2BTG1247eIP-kk59gyWH-e2cK45RUxVjxd-NMqx-Acx1ga9i3oEDmWdnlbRfv6LLQ/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuneX7KwL1QAUEppdq8YenXhyphenhyphenw6xMNM_o4Rwn-QO4uJ3hRXpansMxLsve8WFLSXSdPpIQohiE7OK2BTG1247eIP-kk59gyWH-e2cK45RUxVjxd-NMqx-Acx1ga9i3oEDmWdnlbRfv6LLQ/s320/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2Q7JGkX7kCaAp_dViBy1uacBYntA9cAiciXLJPyrQ_iCYw2auDbz_M1AAqgx3FF-6gLpV0keuJ9nD1R_YENYtxTRGJzVMwzE78hcCHlXIXruLLYLU5ikzqMkeB8ZVUQTB_7iTBOgLwg/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2Q7JGkX7kCaAp_dViBy1uacBYntA9cAiciXLJPyrQ_iCYw2auDbz_M1AAqgx3FF-6gLpV0keuJ9nD1R_YENYtxTRGJzVMwzE78hcCHlXIXruLLYLU5ikzqMkeB8ZVUQTB_7iTBOgLwg/s320/photo+4.JPG" /></a></div>
Now for the fun part, attaching the ankles to the feet was somewhat simplistic. File out the holes on the shells until the bolt passes through. It will be a snug fit, but very doable and should only take a few minutes. After thats done, you should have something like this....
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguNJISNH9WgOHB1KY1MKaDM49gG21Yylw4xJLXe0GFBbKnrb7v2kdZ8raLwt5KG5mniF19e0scLqWSl0XuZg42qX_qPJcFzX79iOGzcNyP1vwFiouM2x_pFx0OH82wuVBKYlCjWML1Xws/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguNJISNH9WgOHB1KY1MKaDM49gG21Yylw4xJLXe0GFBbKnrb7v2kdZ8raLwt5KG5mniF19e0scLqWSl0XuZg42qX_qPJcFzX79iOGzcNyP1vwFiouM2x_pFx0OH82wuVBKYlCjWML1Xws/s320/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div>
Next, I had to adjust my satellite motors. My frame can do 2-3-2.....however I don't want to do it. My satellite motors were stuck in the 90 degree (or two leg) position. I needed to get them to rotate backwards. This was quite complicated as the brake was activated and I had no way to power them. I need to through a HUGE shout out to Jason M and Jerry Greene for helping me. Jason provided a lot of pictures and Jerry talked to me through chat and made sure everything was perfect. I can't thank both of them enough.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM7SytGvAq1mmoZs1dbATIZ88vXsF-ALpPXZ9NW5lRteV9rQ323GbPkGspYf4qXhAkFQSo-PA358k_KqCqP2mo-8O96tKDYZCVOTnyZNj_9_tmRDiK0Rmw9X6t0ceF6p2ElBkBw46cl7g/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM7SytGvAq1mmoZs1dbATIZ88vXsF-ALpPXZ9NW5lRteV9rQ323GbPkGspYf4qXhAkFQSo-PA358k_KqCqP2mo-8O96tKDYZCVOTnyZNj_9_tmRDiK0Rmw9X6t0ceF6p2ElBkBw46cl7g/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
And finally.....after almost 3 LONG years (June makes 3 years), I can finally say that my R2-D2 is standing on all 3 legs. This is a HUGE milestone for me. As an added bonus, another builder (George W.) has loaned me his DDR-2 feet drives. With these, I can likely have R2 driving around by the end of the next weekend. This has been a fantastic weekend, and next weekend will hopefully be even better. We're having a build-day in Lenexa, KS. If you read this and you're from the area and want to attend, message me. Here's the last picture, ENJOY!!!!

God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-36283829855323005212014-02-15T20:32:00.000-08:002014-02-15T20:37:38.497-08:00And here we go!My legs arrived awhile back - shortly after Christmas. Since then, i've moved and been planning my wedding. Kristen's R2 has also taken a backseat due to the wedding (May 30th!). Anyway, with a comic convention coming up, I decided it was time to get cracking and get him standing by then. I commissioned a set of aluminum feet drives from a well known R2 builder, so hopefully they arrive rather soon.
So let's start with Kristen and I's droid in their current state - here's a great picture showing them together!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5V2jhewmH6uq4cz2GZwwPffjaI-wa5w02mcqEBT5YRmezuoc-GHZbT5BIgXJ15aRyTheAb2Vs3_XZUNIJHz5GSfHZylNIggqGUk7B35bJ6ggzZK_T4UepeCBucHiKBe2OJUOIPIAOL7A/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5V2jhewmH6uq4cz2GZwwPffjaI-wa5w02mcqEBT5YRmezuoc-GHZbT5BIgXJ15aRyTheAb2Vs3_XZUNIJHz5GSfHZylNIggqGUk7B35bJ6ggzZK_T4UepeCBucHiKBe2OJUOIPIAOL7A/s320/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div>
Next, here is a shot of my JAG aluminum legs mounted with my JAG aluminum ankles.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5hhzDQiauxM2zw-ixj2E0DHkEXCWpkE-QAKEKnHchEfsihF6xZFWvCgvZTM4INCi8tHxaDPRqZf5dg0itg2vhVLKW1wIQwY3Z9Pqsb31S8xHi48KI_zzIhJg-9Zn_2HBGIKwo5j-z4Zw/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5hhzDQiauxM2zw-ixj2E0DHkEXCWpkE-QAKEKnHchEfsihF6xZFWvCgvZTM4INCi8tHxaDPRqZf5dg0itg2vhVLKW1wIQwY3Z9Pqsb31S8xHi48KI_zzIhJg-9Zn_2HBGIKwo5j-z4Zw/s320/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
Next, I just HAD to see what it looked like with some accessories attached.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQSXJV1zy2pDCsJsEMW3xZE3pxP3wjtUWvWAHg4LgiN10p506zjVpBZS6Jck5EL4m2TGGkxbXRS6TbOL0V8zyKcukzIfad0S0NTyyDJTCbWw4YTP4_URezZPjedUxIy9N0U1ZrSHHPhHE/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQSXJV1zy2pDCsJsEMW3xZE3pxP3wjtUWvWAHg4LgiN10p506zjVpBZS6Jck5EL4m2TGGkxbXRS6TbOL0V8zyKcukzIfad0S0NTyyDJTCbWw4YTP4_URezZPjedUxIy9N0U1ZrSHHPhHE/s320/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div>
Next, here's a photo of the what the leg/ankle will look like when it's attached to a foot.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMiQy5aYTRTlpHHbmxBgu9x24CVQk7HFw-CN4BB_H-4I6kJjijaURw05qQOXSwLJ4F2-oOH46rZyu1d9kjQq8SYCi1fybVEAZfR7dAYgE_eyG6WedRezoXuHMPiuLdKKdy3gJdnpyqSf8/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMiQy5aYTRTlpHHbmxBgu9x24CVQk7HFw-CN4BB_H-4I6kJjijaURw05qQOXSwLJ4F2-oOH46rZyu1d9kjQq8SYCi1fybVEAZfR7dAYgE_eyG6WedRezoXuHMPiuLdKKdy3gJdnpyqSf8/s320/photo+4.JPG" /></a></div>
And finally - here is a photo of the whole family. Kristen's droid and my droid and the legs. I am well on track to have him standing on all 3 in the next 2 weeks. Let's hope everything goes smoothly!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbdGIC0OescFnp0Iig_I5buPZLdpJhXzSz7ooUbIB8aR2GjR6iSrInps2_Ul7mnQ3bjJEIESgnbdB6kFxKPFkX83J7MBZ_z0jSYZGbU0qkHBcXGcyqBw_GhvJKelI5sYT_6Sl8Wqm-wI/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbdGIC0OescFnp0Iig_I5buPZLdpJhXzSz7ooUbIB8aR2GjR6iSrInps2_Ul7mnQ3bjJEIESgnbdB6kFxKPFkX83J7MBZ_z0jSYZGbU0qkHBcXGcyqBw_GhvJKelI5sYT_6Sl8Wqm-wI/s320/photo+5.JPG" /></a></div>God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-28071385100692388252013-10-30T09:10:00.000-07:002013-10-30T09:10:47.531-07:00Steel Feet - All painted up! Finally!!I have had my steel feet for awhile, but have never got around to painting them. Now that I have an ETA for my aluminum legs, I figure I need to get busy on getting the final touches done to attach everything properly once they arrive. For some reason, the feet were a pain in the ass for me to paint. I had to re-sand and re-paint 3 times to get these things nearly perfect. There isn't much else to say about them, but now that they are done. I need to get to painting the aluminum ankles and order the hardware to attach the ankles to the feet. I also got the horseshoes painted, but at the moment have no photos of them. I will soon......promise!

A lot has changed in that time! I got engaged in May, and have started taking flying lessons!! A lot of R2 events have happened since April as well, we did Maker's Faire and Planet Comicon. However, I want to show some pictures of what we have now.
Here is the outer feet, center foot, and outer ankles. I also have the center ankle but its not pictured.

Here is my aluminum horseshoes that now have a coat of primer on them. It'll probably be another few weeks before they receive paint.

Once that happens, R2 will be standing on his own two feet....while awaiting the 3rd. At this point, I am starting to get a sense of "getting there" and it's been a long way coming! R2, with some luck, will be done this fall/winter and then we can focus on getting Kristen's droid done! Her droid will not take nearly as long as she is not doing full aluminum. As soon as some more parts arrive, i'll get a new update going. Oh, and as a side note....paint has been purchased for 'weathering'!God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-21544700049232980132013-04-09T17:14:00.001-07:002013-04-09T17:14:31.929-07:00Ray Park!Ray Park, otherwise known as Darth Maul, was a guest at Planet Comicon. He is without a doubt, one of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. In fact, he talked to me for a good 15 minutes about my droid, and the best part of all.........he offered to sign it for no cost! He even let me take photos with him. I am truly grateful that he became the first (and only so far!) person to sign my droid!! Here is a photo!!

It won't matter if you're dealing with the promotors or the crowds, you'll get a headache. First of all, I have never seen a promoter so disorganized that he doesn't get back to you UNTIL the week of. I have also never met someone who really only cared about the dollar signs, but this promoter fits the bill perfectly. Lets cram as many people into as small of a space as we can was the motto for the weekend. Nonetheless, it was still a good time and a large number of people got to see the droids. Here's a few snapshots from it. I did meet a new builder, so that was exciting!

St. Louis is about a 4 hour drive from my house to there, so we said "LET'S BRING THE DROIDS!". Myself, and several members of the Kansas City R2 Builders (www.kcr2.com) make the trek to St. Louis to be in the con and it was well worth it. Not only did we have a great time, we also met many members of the St. Louis R2 builders group. Here are some photos from St. Louis.

It's been awhile.Well, it has been quite a long time since I have updated anything here.....but that's not to say the building hasn't been continuing. A lot of times it's very time consuming to juggle building and updating a blog. So, I have a LOT of new photos to share with you all, and rather than create one big post, I am going to break it down into a bunch of smaller posts that describe each set of photos!
First of all, let's start with my girlfriend, Kristen. After enduring my build for a long time, the fateful moment finally came.....she decided to build a droid herself. At the moment, her plan is an all black imperial droid with hot pink panels. She's getting started the right way though, she ordered a crash fiberglass dome and the NEW Com8 A-1 aluminum frame. She's extremely excited to get to build and is still waiting on her first few parts to arrive, even though she's already acquired a few aluminum parts thanks to Engima516 (George W.) and myself!
So please, if you're subscribing to my blog, or just passing by, please check out her build as well at.....

It's a plane? It's a......So I have been collaborating on a side project for awhile now. I have been keeping the details very quiet and outside of those directly involved, very few people know whats going on. So, at this point, I can now show you this side project, or at least a 'very' small portion of it. I will give no details, but here is a few photos of the progress. Don't expect to see many updates on this until it gets closer to completion.

Because I know she reads this, hi!
Today was a great day for parts as I received my JAG ankles!

I received new parts for R2's body! I received some aluminum power couplers and some aluminum coin returns! These parts have been extremely difficult to obtain, so I am glad they found a new home! (Thanks Guy!). Also, I have pictured my aluminum side vents that I got from LePaul (Thanks Paul!). I have a very innovative way to mount them, so hopefully once it gets warm enough, I will have them painted and mounted! Here are some photos!! In other news, today was a day of infamy.......the JAG aluminum ankle run started, and I was very quick to snatch up a pair, and they're pretty much sold out in 12 hours. Thank goodness I checked Astromech today! Here's some photos!!

They're not in my hands yet, but I wanted to mark the date. I have recently acquired the side vents, coin returns, and best of all, power couplers! They should be arriving in the next few days, and we'll really get R2's body almost complete!!God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-3415519096804525182013-01-15T12:10:00.001-08:002013-01-15T12:10:43.231-08:00Vents and Electronics!Been awhile since I have had a decent update. I've completed a lot, but just haven't taken the time to post! So anywhere, here's a small mini-update to tell you all whats going on! First, we installed the center vents. This was rather simple, place them where I needed them, marked where the screw hole fit, and then drilled a small hole into the side of the vents, placed a screw in there, and bam, they are secured!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFzDs5qJ0DYSTP6vC97BUdOLFS8oxLMxqdG0vWL-2YAOIi2pKyJVgB7gfe67WgYYhL0WrUVOSuGdKCj5NlUQFMGXHagLIgbNhT9IbsNCdQGbD3zfLS1CKAPm9c-mKi9YmscmV9LV3Qbc/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghFzDs5qJ0DYSTP6vC97BUdOLFS8oxLMxqdG0vWL-2YAOIi2pKyJVgB7gfe67WgYYhL0WrUVOSuGdKCj5NlUQFMGXHagLIgbNhT9IbsNCdQGbD3zfLS1CKAPm9c-mKi9YmscmV9LV3Qbc/s400/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
Next, is my electronics board. There isn't much on here at the moment, but you'll notice an Arduino UNO, a Sparkfun MP3 trigger, and a Syren 10A. All of these work flawlessly with my wireless PS2 controller to control the dome movement and provide the sound! The real gem here is my amplifier. Its a little 3" x 4" 35 watt amplifier from a company called "Pyle". The model is PLMPA35. What makes this micro-amp nice, is that it has a built in 3.5mm jack, ironically, so does my MP3 trigger. So I can connect my MP3 trigger to the amp, then straight to the speaker. The other benefit is that this amp can run 12v directly, so I have no need for a volt regulator. This setup has been tested and worked PERFECTLY!!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTohjI9_xZJptniLr2cgEcZNo-yaHp4RE6bP5jeSrsBjNQMLVZ-ANIk3keLBi21rRJW-1nrpooTgvE3v5VBgKU_EXJaO2ndEGSocybecCTv8QKyefKnIrTQSXfUzzyv-WAoKC2j9v2ZGo/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTohjI9_xZJptniLr2cgEcZNo-yaHp4RE6bP5jeSrsBjNQMLVZ-ANIk3keLBi21rRJW-1nrpooTgvE3v5VBgKU_EXJaO2ndEGSocybecCTv8QKyefKnIrTQSXfUzzyv-WAoKC2j9v2ZGo/s400/photo+3.JPG" /></a></div>
Finally, here's a quick shot of how I mounted the board. You'll notice the amp is off of here, thats because when this photo was taken, the amp hadn't arrived yet! Rest assured, it still fits beautifully.

With the holiday season, a new girlfriend, work, lack of parts, and just being busy, R2 hasn't had much time for 'fun'.....in fact, he's done a lot of sitting!<br />
<br />
However, on the morning of 12/28/2012, R2 became alive! It took a lot longer than it should have due to a mis-wired diagram, however, we were able to fix it with the help of George Westwater(Engima516), a fellow R2 builder!
<br />
<br />
Travis Macken(Tmacken), came by to help install the board/solder and everything in-between. Without a doubt, he's assistance was valuable!<br />
<br />
And last, but certainly not least....I have to give a LOUD shout to Mark Smith of Pensacola, FL. (Marks47, http://marks47.blogspot.com/). Mark spent the entire evening Skype chatting with me walking Travis and I through the process step-by-step, and I can assure you, without his help and direction, we never would have accomplished anything! Mark, I owe you a lot!<br />
<br />
Finally, let me just say that it's been a long road, and it's still a long road to go, but this is a HUGE milestone for R2! Enjoy!!<br />

All the skins are on, and now we're just awaiting some detail pieces. I have been currently building some center vents. I'd post a photo of both of them, but one is drying in clamps, so here's a photo of the other!

We shared tips, tricks, beers, and Monday night football! This post is coming a little late, but life sometimes gets in the way! So, for those of you who haven't been on the forums, let me introduce you to "Gru", otherwise known as Mike! Here is a few photos of his build. He uses a wood frame, styrene skins, Crash's Fiberglass Dome, various resin/aluminum parts, and let me say that without a doubt, it's one of the most quality builds you'll ever see!!

While you always try to be as careful as you can, accidents still happening. While I was fixing the rear panel, for the 15th time, I accidentally broke it.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqnF9VgCOtNUzwP-GWY4NzokbXJGKlHeJx9QSZXR3I_MB76iZdVqHKFl1N_OHBhSlFkgtL4LYI9p52ubUVqUHY9ENsnDeJOf-upE3LR4qLhNwAA8sDfmjFbTCK1KdELVkUUIuzMBDfHnI/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqnF9VgCOtNUzwP-GWY4NzokbXJGKlHeJx9QSZXR3I_MB76iZdVqHKFl1N_OHBhSlFkgtL4LYI9p52ubUVqUHY9ENsnDeJOf-upE3LR4qLhNwAA8sDfmjFbTCK1KdELVkUUIuzMBDfHnI/s400/photo+1.JPG" /></a></div>
To fix this, I went to my bag of parts and got out my surgical repair kit.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipNqHPHaDTc_sXtf2JK_HgP8IU02E8-D6Iy3N2lS5gM0ma3vj4kUEbVrOmPFSLM_RqciF6zTir-JQP7krBUiGJPaUHYbfg3szNKCrLP4QSlSJUWpkrQYQGxQBrJbTUMqCGUYeaCdRLcIU/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="299" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipNqHPHaDTc_sXtf2JK_HgP8IU02E8-D6Iy3N2lS5gM0ma3vj4kUEbVrOmPFSLM_RqciF6zTir-JQP7krBUiGJPaUHYbfg3szNKCrLP4QSlSJUWpkrQYQGxQBrJbTUMqCGUYeaCdRLcIU/s400/photo+2.JPG" /></a></div>
And a short time later, the surgery was complete.

It seems as though most pieces can attach to the skins OR to the frame, so, I think the disaster is averted!God Of Thunderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12353413648385471903noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-950767180002603746.post-16776645323600783612012-10-21T22:11:00.000-07:002012-10-21T22:11:13.764-07:00Skin part 2.Some updated photos with the blue tape removed!

Well. So far, throughout this build, I have done a pretty good job of thinking ahead to prevent mistakes. However, I think I may have made one here, but I am certain there will be a way to fix it in the future.
I went ahead and bonded the outer skins to the inner. Why I did this, I am not sure because it will eventually screw me over. I knew that parts had to be counter-sunk into the inner skins, but for some reason, it honestly never crossed my mind. With that said, I am sure I can find other ways to attach the few pieces left for the body.
With all of that said, I am VERY happy with how things have turned out, and R2 is starting to look more like....well, R2 all the time! The outer skins are bonded with a combination of VHB tape and silicon. Don't ask why, it's proprietary!!
Here are a few pictures of R2's current state! As with the dome, all doors are secured with silicon so that they can easily be removed in the future when I decide to hinge them!
